How to search for articles in databases?

Database searching takes persistence!  Ask a Librarian for additional assistance with using library databases.
Pick a Topic
  • Choose a topic that interests you and meets the requirements of your assignment.
  • Brainstorm your ideas - on paper or with another person.
  • Seek background knowledge about your topic to help you understand and focus your research.
Identify Keywords
  • Identify keywords - main idea nouns that describe aspects of your topic - from your initial research and brainstorming. 
Choose Database
  • Select a database based on your research focus.  
  • Search in more than one database. 
Keyword Search
  • Use keywords in different combinations to search for articles on your topic, e.g. pollution and oceans.
  • Use quotation marks around keyword phrases to search as a concept, e.g. "climate change."
  • Look for the keywords (or subjects) that the database uses to describe articles and use them to target your searches.
Filter Results
  • Use database functions to filter results by source type, publication date, peer-review, etc. 
Read and Evaluate 
Save Results
  • Use database functions to save your research, e.g. email, save to cloud, download, print. 
Cite Articles
  • Generate an MLA or APA citation.
